World book day

7th March 2019

World Book Day 2019 will take place on Thursday 7th March 2019 the theme is ‘Share a Story’.

The ‘World Book Day’ mission is to give every child and young person a book of their own and one of their ways to achieve this are £1 book tokens. You can use these tokens in participating book stores to get the below books for free or alternatively using them to get £1 off any other book of choice.

It is so important to read to and with your children as often as possible (once a day if you can). You can start reading with your babies when they are very young. At just a few weeks old they can focus on pictures and enjoy the colours (especially black and white colours). Then at a few months old they begin to listen, to vocalise and point at the pictures. You can guide this by talking loudly and clearly to keep their attention and pointing at the pictures with them.

Reading books aloud with children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world around them. It helps them to develop language and listening skills and prepares them to understand the written word.  Reading may also help reduce stress of both the adult and child. Sitting down and having a quiet ten minutes of looking at and reading stories can help to wind down a hyperactive child and de-stress a tired and perhaps over wrought adult!!

If you build the foundations of regular reading at a young age, you can help to increase a childs attention span and by talking to your child about what you are reading and evaluating certain words together you can focus together and motivate them to increase their knowledge and skills. Remember, children learn by watching other people, especially you, so seeing you read and reading to them regularly is great modelling behaviour.

Some stories that children love!
